Computers in McIntyre Library
I received a suggestion today asking if there could be a rule limiting Facebook use on McIntyre Llibrary computers. As an avid Facebook user, I was a little taken aback but I completely understand what the person was asking. At times in the semester like this when Library computers are at a premium, shouldn't scholarly activities be given priority over social use? Sometimes it seems like we don't have enough computers. Well, first of all, I am reluctant to establish a lot of rules and policies that are near impossible to enforce. We try to create an environment in the Library that accommodates all sorts of student needs. We don't ban food. We have areas that are pretty noisy and two upper floors designed for silent study. We have group study rooms and carrel desks. Then, of course, we have those bean bag chairs that seem to really help out people who need to catch a little nap between classes.
But wait, there's more. We have over 100 laptop computers that students can check out and bring to their favorite study area. A lot of the time we will have laptops available when all the workstaions are in use. Remember to try that!
